The Aspromonte

massif in southern Italy in the province of Reggio Calabria. It lies near the Straits of Mesyńskiej. The highest peak of the massif is Montalto (1956 m). The massif is pa rt of the Aspromonte National Park. Located here include ski reso rt Gambari (1311 m) and Sanctuary of Our Lady (incl Santuario della Madonna di Polsi) in the municipality of San Luca. Part of the population living in these areas preserved Greek culture and language (so-called Griko language). Giuseppe Garibaldi landed here with three thousand volunteers, starting with a march on Rome, was defeated here August 29, 1862 at the Battle of Aspromonte.
